First comes the idea. Then the metal passes through the hands: it is cast, rolled, shaped, soldered, finished and finally polished. At her Goldkorn workshop, Manuela Mair personally oversees every stage of the process, until the raw material becomes a piece of jewellery made for someone in particular.

It is a craft she has been practising for over 30 years, bringing together creativity and technical expertise. Gold, silver and precious stones become one-of-a-kind pieces, often connected to significant moments in life: an engagement, a wedding, or an existing piece of jewellery waiting to be restored and transformed.

At the fourth edition of The Essence of Craft, Manuela shared her deeply personal approach to goldsmithing: beginning with the material, certainly, but above all with the person who will eventually wear the piece.

Every Piece Begins with an Encounter

At Goldkorn, there is no single design to be reproduced in the same way for everyone. Each piece grows out of a conversation with the person who will wear it, their wishes and the story they want the jewellery to hold.

Manuela creates individual pieces in gold, silver and precious stones, with a particular focus on engagement and wedding rings. Alongside new creations, another important part of her work is the restoration and transformation of existing jewellery.

An old ring can take on a new form. A stone can find a new setting. A piece connected to the past can be transformed without losing what it represents.

The process begins with understanding the person in front of her. The aim is to create something that reflects their personality and can become a lasting companion through life.

From an Idea to the Hands

Behind a finished piece of jewellery are many stages that often remain unseen.

At Goldkorn, the entire process is still guided by the hands. Casting, rolling, shaping, soldering, finishing, stone setting and polishing: Manuela personally follows each stage of the making process.

This is where craftsmanship takes its most tangible form. A material is worked, observed and gradually transformed until an idea becomes something that can be worn.

For Manuela, the craft lies precisely at the meeting point between creativity and technical expertise. Making something by hand means giving an idea a form that is beautiful and harmonious, but also made to last.

It is a vision that reflects the spirit of The Essence of Craft: working by hand not as a nostalgic return to the past, but as a deep understanding of the material and the ability to transform it.

Giving New Life to What Already Exists

There is another distinctive aspect to Goldkorn’s work: not everything has to begin from scratch.

Restoring or transforming a piece of jewellery means working with something that already has an identity of its own. The material is already there, along with the story it carries. The goldsmith’s task is to find a new form that can preserve its meaning.

It is a very different approach from serial production. The value does not lie in the ability to reproduce an object, but in its uniqueness and in the relationship that develops between the person making it and the person who will eventually wear it.

For this reason, every Goldkorn piece is conceived as a one-of-a-kind creation. Not simply because of the way it looks, but because it begins with a particular person, occasion or memory.

Pieces Made to Last

At a time when so many objects enter and leave our lives quickly, craftsmanship follows a different rhythm.

Manuela sees the future of her craft in precisely this ability to create something with character, soul and a story of its own. She believes craftsmanship will continue to play an important role in society because it allows us to create objects that retain their meaning over time.

With jewellery, this becomes particularly tangible. A piece can be worn for years, passed from one person to another, transformed or continue to preserve something of the person who chose it before.

Longevity, then, is not simply a matter of materials. It is also about the bond that develops with what has been made.

Jewellery That Tells the Story of Its Wearer

On the stage of The Essence of Craft 2026, Manuela Mair shared more than 30 years of goldsmithing and a craft in which creativity, technical expertise and a personal relationship with the client continue to come together.

Behind every Goldkorn piece are the hands that shaped it. But before the hands comes a story that needs to be heard. Perhaps this is the most personal aspect of Manuela’s approach to craftsmanship: transforming a precious material into something that truly belongs to the person who will wear it.

Her goal for the future remains simple and, for that very reason, clear:

to create jewellery that moves people.
